Hypnosis – What it is

Although there is still some prejudice against it due to old myths, stage acts and charlatans, Hypnosis is now being used more and more by doctors, dentists, social workers, therapists, sports people, nurses and other professionals.

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness in which the inner, or unconscious, emotional part of the mind is more active. People usually feel an enjoyable sense of relaxation.

In everyday life people enter hypnotic states naturally whilst daydreaming, watching TV, fantasizing and vividly recalling memories.

Hypnosis:

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a form of psychotherapy using hypnosis. (Psychotherapy is treatment of psychological problems by using knowledge of the mind). By using Hypnosis we can ‘talk to’ the inner mind and more easily overcome the source of the problems - in your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. There are many styles, or 'schools', of hypnosis. The approach I use (Ericksonian) is flexible and non-authoritarian, and will be tailored to your needs.

NLP

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) grew out, and is a refinement of, Hypnotherapy.  It works with how we think and how our thoughts affect our feelings and behaviours. It provides a whole range of highly practical and efficient techniques for communication and therapy. Although NLP works on the unconscious part of the mind, orthodox trance is not necessary.

NLP is renowned for providing rapid, effective and lasting solutions to problems. As well as for therapy it is being used in business, sport and education.

A Therapy Session - What to expect

In an atmosphere of confidentiality, trust and respect I'll start by asking you questions to find out what you want and what's been stopping you making the changes you want, consciously and unconsciously. The actual change techniques may involve being guided into a deliberate day-dream like state, going back into the past, remembering things in new ways, imagining how you want things to be, describing your thoughts and feelings, and enjoying a relaxing experience.

It requires your participation during the session and possibly at home practising relaxation listening to a recording.

Length of Treatment

Straight forward problems such as habits (e.g. nail-biting) with no other issues can often be resolved in only one or two sessions. E.g. I have successfully treated a fear of heights in one session. On the other hand treating someone for weight loss who has overeating habits, a background state of anxiety, some guilt and low self-esteem is going to take longer. Complex issues may take three, four or more sessions. I do not set a minimum number of sessions in advance as everyone is treated individually according to their needs and I aim to get results as quickly as possible.

Some people may have sessions intermittently over a longer term as a method of ongoing self-development.

Rather than fixing the session length at 1 hour, I find it more efficient to complete a particular piece of therapy in a session. The average time for the first session is 1 hour 30 minutes.

For those travelling from far afield, it is sometimes possible to make major changes in one longer session of 2 - 3 hours.

Selecting a Therapist

Selecting the right therapist is an individual matter, usually based on how well you get on with the therapist and how much confidence you have that the therapist will be able to help you.

There is no one governing body for Hypnotherapists and various schools and associations emphasise different aspects or methods. Regarding NLP, I am an accredited member of Britain’s NLP Psychotherapy and Counselling organisation (see below).

If you wish to ask me questions, get to know me, or discuss how we could work together, I am happy to speak to you on the phone. There is no obligation to start therapy.

Location of Consulting Room

*Please note: although Hypnotherapy and NLP Psychotherapy as practiced by a qualified and experienced therapist such as myself can help people achieve great results, as everyone is unique no 100% promise of success can be given.

Whilst Hypnotherapy and NLP are renowned for working rapidly, some therapy requires working over an extended period.

Being on medication may affect how well someone responds to therapy.
For health related issues I may ask your permission to notify your GP regarding our therapy.
There are certain conditions I am not qualified to deal with such as certain psychiatric disorders.
